Abstract:This study summarizes earthquake disaster information and key characteristics in Chinese mainland by compiling a catalog of earthquakes with magnitudes of 5.0 or greater in 2023. Drawing on earthquake disaster assessment reports from provincial seismological bureaus, data on disaster losses, and analyses of typical earthquake cases, the main features of earthquake-related impacts are identified. By comparing historical earthquake disaster data from the past 20 years and examining inter annual variations in earthquake frequency and casualty numbers,it is concluded that earthquake-related losses in China in 2023 were both heavier and more concentrated. The primary causes of casualties were housing damage, inadequate evacuation measures, and secondary geological hazards.
