Abstract:On January 23,2024,an MS7.1 earthquake struck Wushi County,Xinjiang. This event was the largest earthquake to occur within the Tianshan seismic belt since the 1992 MS7.3 Kyrgyzstan earthquake. Immediate post-earthquake field investigations revealed that the geological hazards triggered by this event were mainly concentrated within approximately 30km to the east and west of the epicenter and were generally distributed along the regional structural lineaments. the largest geological hazard site was located in Biedieli Gully,about 3km south of the epicenter. the medium-to high-mountain area to the north of the affected region belongs to a zone of intense tectonic uplift. Its steep topography provided substantial potential energy for the development of geological hazards,and nearly all hazard sites triggered by this earthquake were located within this medium-to high-mountainous area. the main types of earthquake-induced geological hazards included rockfalls(collapses),ground fissures,sand liquefaction,and earthquake surface rupture zones. Owing to the loose structure of the rock and soil masses,together with topographic constraints,rockfalls were the most widespread type of geological hazard triggered by the earthquake. the surveyed valleys commonly contain discontinuous accumulation terraces of levels 1 to 3. Because of their loose material composition and steep slopes,slope instability and rockfalls along the edges of these terraces were especially widespread within the intensity Ⅷ~Ⅸ zones.
