Abstract:This paper examines the temporal and spatial distribution of seismic intensity impacts on the Shanghai region throughout history, based on seismic records from Shanghai and its neighboring areas since 1500, and employing the seismic intensity attenuation relationships for this region established by Shi Shuzhong. Analysis of seismic impacts on Shanghai between 1880 and 2023 reveals cyclic variations with an interval of approximately 70 years, in which the first cycle spans 1880-1950, the second 1950-2020, and the present period marks the transition from the end of the second cycle to the beginning of the third. Based on these historical patterns, the third cycle is projected to extend from 2020 to 2090, with a maximum expected intensity of about degree Ⅳ. Looking ahead, it is estimated that the Shanghai area will likely experience an earthquake of approximately degree IV intensity for a 100-year return period, and about degree VI for a 500-year return period. Within the region, the western area near Kunshan and the eastern part of Chongming Island, close to the Yangtze River estuary, are expected to experience stronger intensity impacts, whereas other areas will be comparatively less affected.
